California Institute of the Arts
California Institute of the Arts, CalArts in short, is a private university located in Los Angeles County, Santa Clarita, California, United States. It is highly successful and considered at the top 1% of all animation schools.
The school was originally founded by the famous Walt and Roy Disney brothers in 1961, by merging two other art schools. Chouinard Art Institute (established in 1921) and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music (established in 1883). It was the first higher education school that offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in the visual and performing arts at the time.
California Institute of the Arts offers Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. And, currently, CalArts offers more than 70 programs under its name within its six different schools:
- The School of Film/Video
- The School of Art
- The School of Theater
- The School of Critical Studies
- The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance
- The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts
With about 30% of all students of CalArts, the biggest one of them is The School of Film/Video.
California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) has many alumni well-known animators and producers in the business. Tim Burton, Mark Andrews, Eric Darnell, or Mark Osborne are just a few examples of the school’s famous alumni. Many of the biggest animation companies such as Pixar or Disney are known to have animators graduated from CalArts. There is a list of famous CalArts graduates; here.
If you are interested in animation culture, you probably know about the easter eggs of A113 in almost all animated movies made by Pixar. A113 is a classroom at CalArts. So, you can imagine the level of influence of the school’s graduates in the business.
Facilities of CalArts
California Institute of the Arts has many facilities that all students can benefit from and follow many events being organized them. One of the most famous of them is “Walt Disney Modular Theater”.
In 1993, Lillian Disney financed the remodeling of a campus theater and renamed it after Walt Disney as a gift.
What makes this theater special is that it has a segmented floor, divided into 348 4’x4′ square platforms. These platforms have pistons and can move as needed. The walls are also configurable. Hence, the name summarizes the modular nature of the theater.
