Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is another successful, private, nonprofit research university. CMU is one of the right choices for a good career in the animation industry. With its 140-acre campus, more than 80 buildings in it, Carnegie Mellon University stands in an impressive position in the region.

Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the school was first established back in 1900 as Carnegie Technical Schools. Then in 1912, the school turn into the four-year degree granting, Carnegie Institute of Technology. Later, the school merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research and became Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)in 1967.

Today, Carnegie Mellon University (or just CMU) is an international university, and it has a dozen degree-granting schools in six different continents.

At the moment, CMU has over 14,000 students from all around the world enrolled in the school’s more than 100 different programs.

Animation Degree in Carnegie Mellon University

Among all the programs CMU offers, two of them are related to animation. Through the School of Art, the university grants;

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Electronic and Time-Based Media with a Focus in Animation.
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Integrative Design, Arts & Technology (IDeATe) with a Concentration in Animation & Special Effects.

Digital Art in CMU

Notably, the program of “Integrative Design, Arts and Technology Network” (IDeATe) is unique in CMU. This program lets all the students and faculties of the university participate in studio experiences. Every single student of CMU, regardless of the program they enrolled, can take concentrations or minors in subjects such as Game Design, and Animation & Special Effects.

Also, the one hundred programs of CMU we mentioned here don’t include the supportive courses that School of Art offers. “Integrative Design, Arts and Technology Network” (IDeATe) offers supportive courses too. These courses includes;

  • Advanced ETB: 2D Animation
  • Advanced ETB: Animation
  • Advanced ETB: Moving Image Magic: Visual Effects and Motion Graphics, and Animation, Art, and Technology
